DIY-ing

I have been doing a bit of DIY for our home lately. As my friend said DIY stuff is not all the time equal to saving money and i guess it's true that's why I only have allotted budget for something i want to do.

Like this one below. My husband wants me to change the display in our coffee table in the living room. We had candles before but I suggested we moved it to the dining table instead so I made the following.

- Ikea Kulort in purple
- Ikea glass vase
- Ikea plastic flower

And turned out to this

Not bad, yeah?

SHARE: How often to we change bed sheets?

As I try to entertain myself because I'm sad and I'm missing my mother,  I stumbled upon this Yahoo article which I think is very useful for everyone who uses bed sheets. All we need to know is the list below - it's kind of a long read but surely informative.

 Start here:

No matter your relationship status, you never go to bed alone. Nestled within your sheets are countless intruders. For an explanation, we turned to Philip M. Tierno Jr., director of clinical microbiology and immunology at New York University's Langone Medical Center.

How often do most Americans change their sheets?

It varies. Most people have a standard of once a week. But many people go three weeks, a month or more. "Younger people seem to leave their sheets on the bed longer," Dr. Tierno says.

How often should they change their sheets?

Wash sheets and pillowcases once a week, and you'll eliminate that debris that has accumulated in the bed for that week. You'll be safer from breathing in that material.

Debris? How can sheets possibly get that dirty?

Human skin cells become food for dust mites. That is one of the biggest problems associated with bedding. Mites accumulate, along with their feces. But there is also animal hair, dander, fungal mold, fungal spores, bodily secretions and bacteria. Also: dust, lint, fibers, particulates, insect parts, pollen, soil, sand and cosmetics. "One person can perspire as much as a liter in a night—even more if you have a lot of covers," he says. And, of course, people eat in bed as they watch TV.

All this stuff is yucky, but is it a health risk?

It is mainly a threat to respiratory tracts and not an infectious source. If you have allergies or asthma, this matter can exacerbate it. If you don't have an allergy, you could develop one because you're constantly challenged.

Is there an ideal way to wash bedding?

The water should be 130 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit, typically the washing machine's hot-water cycle. Then dry using a hot drying cycle. That is germicidal; it actually kills and destroys a lot of vegetative material. It also kills the dust mites. For extra protection, "bleach is excellent. It is probably the cheapest germicide and can be used in a low concentration." Cold water non-bleach bleaches use peroxide, so they're also germicidal.

Once a week, hot water. Then I'm safe?

No. To protect the mattress, I use an impervious outer cover. If you look at a mattress, it collects debris by gravity. All kinds of things collect on it that are absorbed into its core. Without the impervious cover, your mattress is a "zoological and botanical garden," he says. The outer covers are made of pliable, plastic vinyl and are commonly used by people with asthma and allergy symptoms. The covers should also go on pillowcases. "If you put an impervious outer cover over the mattress and mattress pad, your mattress won't harm you."

As for me we change our sheets once a week, wash it on the washing machine with faucet water. We don't use hot water for washing clothes but we use germicidal liquid detergent to sanitize the sheets and some of our clothes. We also let our pillow stay under the sun for an hour or two during the hottest time of the day, noon. I observe that they smell clean when do. :D

Let's keep clean to stay healthy! Yey!

Something NEW

Today, I want to post something light. Nothing important, I was just happy to get a new lunch bag. Mababaw lang. Ha Ha.

We had our usual weekend grocery shopping at Giant Supermarket last Saturday. There are really disadvantages when you shop from big stores, always, you end up buying the 'not so needed' things and one of those were our lunch bags.

We were looking for nothing on the food storage section when our maid blunted, "Kailangan nyo na Sir ng bagong Lock&Lock" In short, our lunch boxes are old and doesn't look quiet good, according to our dear maid. Ha Ha. We really didn't think about that but napag isip ako. E nagagamit pa naman e, bakit ba?! LOL.

So we were looking and looking until I found something at the very top of the display. It's the Lock&Lock lunch bags. We checked out the display and found that they are of really good quality.

We found gray and black bag colors. I got the gray bag which has 3 350ml rectangular containers, the 3rd one has dividers on it,  I use it to store my fruit (grapes and fruit cocktail), the other 2 are for the rice and adobo. :D

Hubbydub got the black bag with the same containers inside. Some has Lock&Lock water bottle but I don't like that as I normally use my mug/water in the office.

The carrying bag is insulated with zipper and handles. It is also smart to carry. Safe for dishwasher, freezer and microwave. the display price is 24.99SGD but we were happy to know it is discounted to 17.99sgd upon payment - I don't know why.

It is surely a happy meal with our new lunch bags. :D

Safety cautions from here:
1.When using the microwave, be sure to keep all of the locks open (If left locked, the product may explode due to excessive steam build up).
2.Hot food may cause air to expand and result in inferior lockage. Store food in a container after food has cooled off. Be careful especially when you open a container containing hot food to avoid burns.
3.Never store alcohol, benzene, gasoline, oil, or other volatile or flammable chemicals in your containers.
